Essay: Beyond a Garden in Every School, by Philip Nix
"In our schools today, we need to ask what we are training our students to see," writes
Philip Nix, founding Headmaster of Sonoma Country Day School. "We expect them
to 'go to art,' 'go to science,' 'go to physical education,' and 'go to English.' We

CEL Joins Grameen Bank Delegation Hosted by Island Outpost
in Jamaica
As Jamaica struggles with poverty, declining children's health, and the erosion of
vital agricultural traditions, national and international leaders are joining to help
the island's 2.7 million residents develop a more sustainable strategy for the future.
CEL Executive Director Zenobia Barlow was invited to join them in February to address
the key role that education can play in this process. Attending at the invitation of
Chris Blackwell, and author and farmer Michael Abelman, Barlow joined a delegation
of the Nobel prize-winning Grameen Bank, which pioneered micro financing loans to help
people raise their families out of poverty, hosted by Island Outpost.

Fostering Sustainable Education in Hawaii
With most of Hawaii's food and energy coming from overseas, the Hawaiian government
and citizens have begun developing plans for greater self-sufficiency and protection
of their fragile ecosystems. CEL education specialist Carolie Sly, Ph.D., met with
leaders of the Maui Independent Schools Organization in February. They discussed
professional and curriculum development options for advancing sustainability education
on the islands.

Teachers College Columbia University, will be held at the award-winning San Domenico
School, an independent, co-educational school. The National Association of Independent
Schools awarded San Domenico a 2007 Leading Edge Program award for environmental
sustainability. Twenty miles north of San Francisco, the school is located on 500
acres, which participants are welcome to enjoy. Delicious organic meals will be provided.
