Discussion Guide and Conversations Cards for Film Elemental

The Center for Ecoliteracy presents a Discussion Guide and conversation cards for the film Elemental.

Elemental (Go Project Films, 2012) delivers a powerful and provocative portrait of modern environmental activism through the story of eco-warriors from India, Canada, and Australia, united by their deep connection with nature and commitment to confront some of the most pressing ecological challenges of our time.

It relates both the successes and hopes and the setbacks and conflicts encountered by its protagonists. It reveals them as real people confronting personal and environmental issues, and shows the inner resources and community connections that allow them to persevere in the face of powerful opposition.

The Center's free downloadable Discussion Guide uses the metaphor of the hero’s journey to analyze the main characters, and explores three themes raised by the film: connection to place, perseverance, and nature as teacher.

The Guide offers discussion ideas, reflective exercises, and action projects for high school or college-level students in a variety of courses, including environmental studies, literature, political science, leadership, and service learning.

Companion conversation cards provide three ways for students to engage: "Think cards" encourage reflection on a quote from the film. "Ask cards" invite questioning and dialogue. "Act cards" direct students toward taking specific actions in their community.
