Our Services

The Center for Ecoliteracy has worked with representatives from schools and allied organizations in over 200 cities on six continents. supporting educators in their efforts to advance schooling for sustainability.

Our approach considers the needs of public and independent schools and their larger communities. We focus on:
  • Curriculum integration and cross-discipline teaching strategies
  • Development of hands-on teaching and learning projects
  • Food as an organizing principle for encouraging ecological understanding
  • Gardens and the campus as learning environments

We typically engage in long-term relationships to help ensure lasting results. Services include:

Academic Program Audit
An in-depth examination to help educators identify what they are already doing to address sustainability throughout the K-12 curriculum. Includes Center for Ecoliteracy review of curriculum maps, guides, and scope and sequence; interviews with teachers and administrators; and delivery of a final report or presentation to the faculty.

Coaching for Teaching and Learning

Coaching with individuals and groups to improve teaching and learning around sustainability. Offerings include consultations, lesson observation, demonstration lessons, and help identifying teaching resources.

In-depth Curriculum Development
Sessions with faculty to develop lessons and projects that teach sustainability from the perspective of the head, heart, hands, and spirit.

Keynote Presentations
A comprehensive overview of our initiative, Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability, including stories from exemplary schools nationwide. Also explores the ecological principles and systems thinking that underlie sustainable living.

School Sustainability Report Card
A broad assessment, led by Center for Ecoliteracy specialists, of schools' sustainability policies and practices, through the lens of campus, curriculum, community, and school food systems. Uses a rubric designed by the Center that relies upon self-reporting and observation. Culminates in a final report or presentation to the faculty.

Technical Assistance
Support in identifying partners, such as food service providers and change leaders, school garden and cooking program designers, green architects, and practical advisors from other exemplary schools.
