Wellness Policy Guide
Federal law requires that all schools and districts participating in federally funded school meal programs adopt a wellness policy containing goals and guidelines for foods available on campus, nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness.
Virtually every district has a policy on the books, but most could be greatly improved, and all need to be regularly reviewed and updated. This process provides an opportunity for the school and surrounding community to maintain an ongoing conversation about the school’s responsibility for student well being.
In collaboration with Slow Food USA and the Chez Panisse Foundation, the Center for Ecoliteracy developed a Model Wellness Policy Guide. It offers language and recommendations to assist in developing and maintaining comprehensive policies that set high standards for healthy learning.
